Calm & Cooling Family River Rafting

Family River Rafting

There’s nothing better than spending a day on the water with the whole family, experiencing the beauty of southern Colorado while enjoying each other’s company. Young children and grandparents are the perfect participants for one of our family whitewater rafting trips on this easy, scenic, and mild section of river.

You’ll experience a handful of class II and easy class III rapids on the 5-mile stretch of the upper Bighorn Sheep Canyon. These rapids are a fantastic introduction to white water, but are not too challenging for our littlest river adventurers. Children and adults can paddle along with their guide, who has the ability to maneuver the raft on his / her own.

Family River Rafting

Guides will operate an oar boat, which allows them to steer, power, and stop the raft whenever necessary. Boats can hold up to 7 to 8 guests at a time. On these family river rafting trips, safety is our first priority – the second is fun! Depending upon water level, family rafting trips often stop to swim, splash, and explore.

There’s no better way to beat the summer heat than to take a dip in the cool waters of the river. The water temperature can range from 50-70 degrees, depending on the time of year. Our river is over 80% natural runoff, so you’ll be rafting on what was once snow! You’ll also see your fair share of local flora and fauna on this family rafting trip, ranging from towering red rock canyon cliffs, lush cottonwood groves, ponderosa pines, and perhaps even Bighorn Sheep!

Family River Rafting

On the Echo Canyon family river rafting trip, you’ll arrive at our office to check in and receive your safety equipment. We’ll transport you upstream, where you’ll meet your guide and hear a brief safety orientation. Your guide will answer any questions that you have and will explain how to stay in the raft, how to keep yourself in the boat, and what to do in the event of an unexpected situation.

You’ll also learn how to effectively paddle. Even smaller children are welcome to try their hand at paddling on our family whitewater rafting trips. Paddlers are auxiliary on the Family Float, and you can put your paddles aside and relax at any time. Then it’s on to the river! You’ll spend about 1.5 hours on the water, and we’ll provide a light snack to keep everyone happy and energized.

What to Bring for FAMILY White Water Rafting Trips

Some things to remember when family rafting:

• Sunscreen is always a good idea!

• You are encouraged to bring water on your trip and are welcome to bring additional snacks

• Wear synthetic clothing for maximum sun protection and quick drying

• Secure footwear is mandatory for all participants

• The minimum age is 4 to 5 years dependent on river flows

BIGHORN SHEEP CANYON | Minimum 6 years of age

Bighorn Sheep Canyon

Give your family a taste of white water adventure, paired with the perfect amount of calm Colorado scenery. Bighorn Sheep Canyon is gentle in just the right places to catch sight of a few Colorado Bighorn Sheep, and offers exhilarating class II & III whitewater sections – just enough to keep younger river rafters’ attention.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon boasts some beautiful Colorado river countryside and local wildlife. Hawks, Bighorn Sheep – and a few eagles now and then – may join you in your family adventure. Whether it is your 10th time or your first time white water rafting has never been as beautiful.

Who should consider Bighorn Sheep Canyon?

Family River Rafting

Bighorn Sheep Canyon is ideal for beginner white water rafting guests who are looking for a taste of whitewater but not the high-adrenaline rapids. Large groups with varying ability levels will also enjoy this beginner rafting option. We recommend that all passengers on the Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip are at least 6 years of age for most water levels. Guests with certain medical conditions are encouraged to stick to class III sections of river – Bighorn beginner rafting is ideal for just that reason. And don’t forget to mention your medical conditions when making your reservation for the first time!

Before you all start this beginner white water rafting adventure, our certified guide will walk you through all the rafting training you’ll need to handle the river. And you can rest assured our guides receive the most intensive training of any outfitter in Colorado. Our guides are passionate about their jobs, and they’ll work with you to make sure your first time rafting is one adventure you’ll never forget.

The full day family beginner rafting trip includes a riverside steak lunch, more miles on the river – and more rapids – and leaves at 9:30 am (be sure to check in 45 minutes prior). If you’re interested in the half day rafting trip, be sure to look at some other trips you can combine – like the popular Raft-n-Rail or Raft & Zip trips. You can always to choose to add a Royal Gorge Bridge ticket to your reservation as well.

Extreme White Water Rafting for the Adventure Seeker

White Water Rafting Adventure

If you live on adrenaline and want some close-to-home adventures, the Royal Gorge rafting trip is the one for you. Just about an hour from Colorado Springs, you’ll find yourself in white water a thousand feet beneath the Royal Gorge Bridge. You’ll definitely taste extreme Colorado white water rafting as you explode over class III to V rapids with names like Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, and Boat Eater.

In between these, soaked and exhilarated, you’ll see astounding geology, witness local wildlife, and feel the history of the Arkansas River and the Colorado Mountain West. Because we hand-craft each of them with your feedback, no Royal Gorge rafting trip is like any other – one reason this trip is always a favorite.

1000 feet beneath the Royal Gorge Bridge

Echo Canyon also offers a full-day Royal Gorge white water rafting trip. This one begins slowly, with a float that calmly escalates through class II and III white water rapids in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon. After a riverside steak lunch, and some time to take in the stunning beauty of the Royal Gorge, you’ll launch into excitement you’ll never forget, right in Colorado Springs’ backyard.

Family River Rafting

To take on these adventure-class Royal Gorge white water rafting trips, we recommend guests are 14 to 18 years of age, in good physical condition and able to swim well. Water levels dictate the minimum age; typically the peak levels occur in mid-June. During high water flows the minimum age is usually around 16 years of age.

Tour Times

Our half-day rafting trips depart from Echo Canyon headquarters daily at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The full-day rafting trips leave daily at 10:00 a.m.
